The New York Rangers have agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Nigel Dawes.
The 23-year-old Dawes skated in 61 games with the Rangers last season, registering 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points, along with 10 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating. He led the club in plus/minus rating, ranked second in shootout game-deciding goals (two) and tied for third in game-winning goals (four). His four game-winning goals also tied for second in the NHL among all rookie skaters.
The terms of the deal are believed to be one year $600,000. It will be interesting to see the kind of role Renney uses Dawes in. I think he has the ability to play with Gomez on the first line, but that remains to be seen. Hopefully he doesn’t vanish into a sophomore slump as Prucha did following his rookie year.
