Ryan Hollweg Traded to Toronto

July 15, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs swung a deal to acquire forward Ryan Hollweg from the New York Rangers on Monday.

The Maple Leafs sent the Pittsburgh Penguins fifth-round pick, acquired in the Hal Gill trade, to New York.

Good trade for the Rangers, Hollweg was a nice locker room guy but he was at times a liability with his untimely penalties. The trade frees up space on the fourth line while also improving it. A lot of fans ripped Hollweg apart, I’m not for that. Whatever people say, he’s a hockey player. He has little talent, no real size and yet he’s stayed in the NHL on a playoff team for three seasons. He’s a blue collar hockey player who is living the dream. He gets by on pure work ethic, heart, and desire.  The people who unmercifully  obliterate him in blogs and forums are people who’ve never seriously played and loved the game themselves. Best of luck in Toronto.

He may not have been the best player, but he was a good team player. He stood up for his mates when needed and provided energy from the fourth line. He took bad penalties at times but a lot of them were based more on reputation than reality.

Thanks man, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say i hope to see him back with the Rangers. But i do agree with you that the general negative opinions among Rangers fan about Hollweg is wrong. I appreciate a young guy who works hard and is living the NHL dream. It’s not like he isn’t grateful he’s playing hockey for a living by not giving it his all every time he plays. I’m not saying hes a good hockey player, but I feel for him and appreciate what he is doing.
