The dust has settled, the former Captain has departed for Russia and the team is left with a number of suitable candidates for the captaincy. The list includes Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Markus Naslund and Wade Redden.
Naslund was a captain in Vancouver and was very well respected by his teammates and loved by the fans. However, he has a two year contract and won’t be with the team long. Although he is capable of holding the position his short term contract does not provide any stability. Redden in my opinion is only an option due to his long term deal (THN ranked it the second worst signing of the summer), he’s entirely too soft spoken for such a position. Also I am not at all a fan of handing the ‘C’ to a player who is in the first year of his contract, another reason why I don’t think Naslund gets it.

In my opinion the only real options are Drury or Gomez, yeah i know what a unique thought. I really like Drury, he was a co-captain with the Sabres and is renowned clutch performer. He is a prime example of how to play the game the right way and a class act. As for Gomez, he is much more vocal in terms of the media and on the ice. As Drury is somewhat soft spoken, Gomez is sarcastic, talkative and capable of handling NY press. Both Drury and Gomez have long term deals. The plan since they were signed was to eventually have the team handed over to them. Jagr, Straka and Shanahan are gone its now Drury’s and Gomez’s team, this is what they signed up for.

With that said, I think that the Rangers should follow suite with how Buffalo did it with Drury and Briere. Drury and Gomez should be Co-Captains. It’s a fail proof solution that combines the two best choices. What can be wrong with it? I really can’t find a negative, it’s time to officially hand over the reigns of the team to them. I think Naslund should get an ‘A’ as well.

I think Gomez should get the C, not only because he’s there on a long term and to the best of my knowledge a NTC contract and he would be the first Hispanic NHL Captain and as a Hispanic that would mean alot to me.

He has a no movement clause, Drury has a no trade clause. The first hispanic captains good an all but I’m not sure that he’s the best choice to carry the C by himself
