So, what does that mean for the Rangers? Well, according to a report from the New York Daily News, New York has offered a one-year, bonus-laden contract, but Jagr wants a two-year deal at superstar pay akin to the $7M per year the team is paying Scott Gomez and Chris Drury.
“You know, money determines your position on the team – especially in the NHL,” Jagr told reporters in the Czech Republic, according to the Daily News. “As a top earner, you have more respect, they treat you differently than other cheaper players. But what I pursue the most is trust.
“I’ve already realized that I was playing my best hockey when there was the most pressure on me. I need to hear or need to know: ‘This is your team. You are the key element and it will do as you will do.’ Then I can play my best hockey. And I feel I can still play on the highest level.”
Does the bolded quote sound familiar? It should cause I have been saying that for the past 2 weeks about Jagr. Like I’ve been saying all along, he needs to feel like it’s still his team and he is still the goto guy.
There are reports that the Pittsburgh Penguins have offered Jagr a deal. I highly doubt it will happen, ever since he left Jagr has hated playing at Mellon Arena has been unable to perform there.
More updates to come.
