The New York Post reports that Mats Sundin is going to be the teams number one target when free agency opens on July 1st. Is Sundin a great player? Yes. Is he hall of fame caliber? Yes. Can he still play? Yes. But he is not the right fit for the team. Why are the Rangers targeting ANOTHER center in free agency when they just signed Drury and Gomez last summer and they have an emerging Brandon Dubinsky and Blair Betts playing the fourth line? It baffles me, not only that the team has a plethora of centers at Hartford, some of which are NHL ready, Artem Anisimov anyone?

The Rangers should target Brian Rolston, not because he’s younger than Sundin (Rolston is 35) but because he better fits the Rangers needs. Rolston can play wing and has effectively in the past. Not only that, he can play tough in front of the net. Also and the reason I am the biggest advocate for Rolston, he has a BOOMING slap shot and can play the point on the power play. Rolston is a team guy. He’s flown under the radar for years, he doesn’t have the star power of Mats Sundin, but that’s why I like him. He also most likely will not cost as much as Sundin. Rolston kills two birds with one stone, a player who can play the wing with Drury or Gomez and a player who can quarterback a power play without taking away a spot from Sanguinetti.
